“…Granite Hills is one of the enduring classics, pioneering the successful growing of Riesling and Shiraz in an uncompromisingly cool climate. It is based on 11 hectare of Riesling, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir (the last also used in its sparkling wine).

After a quiet period in the 1990s, it has been reinvigorated, with its original two icons once again to the fore. The Rieslings age superbly, and the Shiraz is at the forefront of the cool-climate school in Australia…” James Halliday – Australian Wine Companion

Granite Hills 2001 Vintage Sparkling

The Macedon Ranges vineyards are renowned for world-class sparkling wine, and this long-aged, late-disgorged Granite Hills is one of the most impressive. It’s a very special, mature Victoria sparkling, made from cool-grown Macedon chardonnay and pinot noir. It’s very complex, with citrus, apple pie, nutty and lightly toasty elements seamlessly integrated into an impressively complete wine. There’s depth and richness, creaming texture, and a perfectly measured thread of sweetening making it “brut” in the traditional champagne manner. It’s dry, lingering and aromatic.

  • Light bright green-yellow; flowery apple and citrus aromas lead into a light but gloriously juicy palate, the finish long and cleansing.
Rating 95/100 – James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion
  • One to enjoy both as a youngster and with a few years in the cellar. The granite soils and old vines deliver fragrant pure Riesling with stony aromas and spicy, exotic perfume. The palate has a taut, measured shape with lime citrus and a gentle spicy twist to close.

  • This is a quite austere style of cool-climate Riesling, delicately scented, with a little sulphur showing, and a very tight, delicate palate with high acidity that cries out for either food or time in the cellar. Very good potential. Serve it with fish.
91 – Gourmet Traveller Wine Top 100 New Releases, Huon Hooke, October/November 2009
  • James Halliday The Weekend Australian, November 2009 – The Best 100 White, Red & Sparkling Wines

Granite Hills 2004 Shiraz

  • Gold medal – Royal Melbourne Show, October 2009
  • Silver medal – The Visy Great Australian Shiraz Challenge, November 2009.
Top 8 wine from 422 entries.
  • Licorice notes to the nose, with smoky oak and a spearmint lift. Rich, round and viscous in the mouth, with peppery flavours. Very attractive.
    4 stars – Winestate Magazine, July 2009
  • Has the hallmark spicy/peppery nuances of Granite Hills, but is otherwise unusual, reaching 15% alc/vol and spending three years in oak – neither of which are the least obvious.
Rating 95/100 – James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion

Granite Hills 2006 Pinot Noir

  • Bronze medal – Royal Melbourne Wine, October 2009
  • Bronze medal – Daylesford Wine Show, November 2009
  • Bronze medal – Ballarat Wine Show, November 2009
  • Well made; good colour, texture and structure; black cherry spice and bramble nuances to both bouquet and palate; shrugs off its alcohol.
Rating 91/100 – James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion

Granite Hills 2005 Heathcote Merlot

From the cool southern end of Heathcote, only 12 km north of Granite Hills; light- to medium-bodied, with spicy, savoury varietal fruit supported by fine tannins; belies its alcohol.
Rating 90/100 – James Halliday, Australian Wine Companion
